Kidney Stent due to Kidney stone

by Steven J.
(Sacramento CA)

After four (4) days of experiencing severe pain on my left side (due to kidney stone), I was admitted to the ER. They took samples of blood and urine for testing and also performed a CT scan, to determine the severity of the problem.

The tests showed kidney malfunction so I was admitted for emergency kidney stent surgery. I was placed under general anaesthesia and was knocked out for about an hour. When I woke up the stent was in place.

I could not actually feel the stent, however, I always feel the need to urinate (male patient) and feel the need to go again, right after finishing... very frustrating. There is a lot of blood in my urine but I am drinking lots of water. Eventually, it will turn back to its normal color. I am experiencing some pain so some pain medication was prescribed.

I stayed in hospital for two and a half (2.5) days... I felt awful. Subsequently, after experiencing some pain, I visited a Urologist at the emergency walk-in. They prescribed more pain killers and something called Oxybutynin, which alleviates the spasms.

I now have to wait three (3) weeks for laser blast of the stone and kidney stent removal. For the first week after initial surgery they recommended lots of bed rest and lots of fluids all the time.

stent and sex
by: Anonymous

It is temporary, don't worry about it.

I think it is just the shock and the stress introduced to the system.

I bled in my urine for over 6 weeks but once the stent is gone sex is back. :)

My Boyfriend

My boyfriend just recently got a stent placed due to kidney stones and he is having a problem obtaining an erection, I told him that it is probably temporary and he shouldn't worry. Was this a problem for you . I don't mean to be invasive.

Stent Put in October 2013
by: B.L.

I have been plagued with kidney stones since I was 22. Two days ago I had an emergency stent put in and I am currently laying on the couch wishing I didn't have it. They removed the stone before inserting the stent. I am not sure how to get through the 3 weeks of constantly feeling like I have to urinate. I drink and it passes right through me (I have to set on the toilet to drink my water). So far the experience is not the best. I am praying when I wake up tomorrow that my experience improves.

Two Month Wait To Remove Kidney Stent
by: Anonymous

I have had a stent since the end of June this year (2013). It was inserted by an emergency procedure. On September 4 it should be removed as well as the stone that caused all this. Understand how you feel.

Kidney Stent frustration
by: Steven J.

Thank you for your comments. The only real bummer here is that it is about 3 weeks wait between the original placement of the stent and the removal.

When I asked why, I was told that there are cancer patients and patients with severe kidney problems ahead of me and that in my condition it is not life threatening.

So the prescribed medications and rest will have to do and one more thing, I suggest all of us go into preventative mode to avoid getting kidney stones in the future.

Temporary Kidney Stent Discomfort
by: Site Admin

Your story is similar to many patients who have had a kidney stent inserted. The associated pains and discomforts are quite common but are usually temporary. Hopefully, yours won't last much longer. Once the stone is expelled and the ureter is healed, the stent can be removed... and life returns to normal.

Thanks for sharing your story. Feel free to keep us posted about the procedure to remove the stone... Let us know how it all goes.

All the best!
