Uncomfortable Kidney Stent

by Sue
(UK)

I was (eventually) diagnosed with idiopathic renal fibrosis which caused my kidneys to go into renal failure. After having nephrostomy bags as an emergency measure it was then decided to put stents from my kidneys to my bladder.

This was on May 14 and I was told they would be in for about six months to give the medication a chance to work.

I am permanently uncomfortable feeling like I need to use the toilet all the time. The more I move about the worse it is and the more blood I get in my urine. I experience hot sweats and generally feel unwell; sex is a no go because it hurts.

Because of these complications, I have not been able to return to work.

I am glad (comforted) to know that other people have had problems with kidney stents and it's not just me being a baby.

It Would Be Laughable If...
by: Charlene Crosthwaite

First of all I wish you a very speedy recovery from your kidney issues!
I was dealing with kidney stones last year and had to have a kidney stent to push a large stone back into the kidney. I had the stent for almost three months (while having lithotripsies to break up the stones). As much as I dreaded having the stent pulled, it was heaven to have it finally removed!
Be prepared to continue to have the issue of having the urge to urinate. Practice kegels, it really seems to help! At this point, the urge isn't nearly as bad as it was a year ago.
As for having a sex life...forget it! If there are people out there that can manage it...more power to them! That part would be laughable if there wasn't so much pain involved! I believe that the people that believe it's possible have probably never had to actually have to deal with the issues of having a stent (never mind having to deal with two of them).
I also had upset stomach issues and felt very achy. Thankfully most of it has passed.

Sue, your story is heartbreaking. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you.

It is never easy to deal with kidney health challenges and the additional discomfort of having to use a kidney stent.

Please continue to focus on your health and do what's best for you. Keep checking regularly with your doctor to ensure that all is well. Talk to your health care provider about your challenges and ask whether there are any solutions to alleviate the discomfort.

Thanks for sharing your story and keep us posted on how things develop.
